Importance of Right Size Helmet

When you step into a motorcycle accessory shop, the size of the helmet is the last thing on your mind and it usually is how the helmet looks that finally influences your decision of buying a new helmet. However, that is not the right approach when it comes to purchasing a helmet with the best safety feature because if the helmet does not fit snugly on your head there’s a very good chance of it coming off on impact and leaving your head completely exposed to the hard surface of the tarmac. Here are a few important reasons why you should get the right size for your helmet.

Snug Fit Ensures Protection

Like we said earlier a snugly fitting helmet will stay on your head even if you happen to be in an accident and your head hits the ground. One of the common reasons for head injuries is the lack of wearing a helmet that is certified by quality authorities and one of the parameters that these quality authorities check is how snugly the helmet fits on the head of the wearer. So instead of focusing a lot on how the helmet looks make sure to check the proper fit of the helmet. For this you will need to know the size of your head first. Doing that is easy, all you need is a tailor’s tape which you can wrap around the forehead a little above the eyebrows to get the circumference of your head in both millimeters and inches. Once you get the size, tally it with the manufacturer’s size chart and purchase a helmet that closely matches your head size.

Snug Fit Helmets are Comfortable

A motorcycle helmet that does not fit properly on the head can waft around a lot in strong wind conditions which is very common in open roads and highways. When that happens it completely compromises on your safety as well as makes you very uncomfortable because the weight of the helmet is usually too much for the neck muscles to control, which means not only will you be completely disengaged and distracted from focusing on the road you will start feeling a physical fatigue because of the neck muscles trying too hard to keep the helmet on your head.

Snug Fit Helmets Provide Weather Protection

If there is a gap between the helmet beading/sealing and your neck or any other part of the head, cold wind, water and other natural elements can easily pass through it and that is the last thing you want especially if you’re riding on a rainy or cold day. A well-fitting helmet keeps your face protected and covers the neck as well, which means you will have a holistic protection against the elements of weather, which is very important to stay comfortable on the motorcycle during your rides.

Snug Fit Reduces Muscular Strain

Last but not the least, a good fitting helmet also ensures that your neck muscles stay strain-free, which is what you want to be able to focus on the road and not worry about unnecessary neck pains at the end of the ride! This is especially important if you have a dual-visor helmet with a full-face configuration which is slightly heavier than an open face helmet, and additional weight along with micro movements caused by a loose-fitting helmet against strong wind is not the ideal configuration of a helmet.
